The challenge of Vlietkinderen
Custom-made acoustic ceiling clouds bring peace, clarity and comfort to a vibrant childcare environment

The challenge of Vlietkinderen
Vlietkinderen, a childcare center in Voorburg, faced a major acoustic problem. The building's general and group areas (areas that are filled with energetic children every day) were plagued by overwhelming noise levels. The high ceilings and hard surfaces enhanced the sound, making the space uncomfortable to stay in for both staff and children.
Although some acoustic materials were built in during the construction of the building, they proved to have insufficient effect. Initial attempts to control the sound via these built-in components failed, creating the need for a more specialized, effective solution.
The implemented solution
In order to accurately diagnose the problem, Akoesta started the project with professional acoustic measurements in both the central room and the five group rooms. These data-driven insights laid the basis for a detailed proposal, with multiple design options tailored to the needs of Vlietkinderen. After careful consideration, it was decided to start installing ceiling islands exclusively in the central common area.
The implementation required meticulous planning. The ceiling was 6 to 7 meters high and some of the acoustic features of the original construction had to be preserved. In addition, all installation work had to be carried out outside opening hours to ensure the safety of the children and staff.
The result
The transformation was immediate and impressive. The acoustics in the large common area improved significantly and brought a sense of peace and comfort to a previously chaotic space. Staff reported a noticeable reduction in auditory load, while both parents and children appreciated the more serene environment.
Although this phase focused only on the central space, the success of the solution lays a strong foundation for future improvements in the group rooms. For Vlietkinderen, this was more than a technical upgrade; it was an investment in well-being, safety and quality of care.

The 3 big ones
takeaways
1. Tailored solutions perform better than generic solutions.
Despite initial efforts to use acoustic materials during construction, the problem persisted until Akoesta performed accurate measurements and implemented a customized solution. This highlights that effective acoustic performance requires focused, data-driven design, not ready-made solutions.
2. Design and function can go hand in hand.
The cloud-shaped PET panels have not only solved the noise problem, but also added a playful, visually appealing element to the space. This project shows that acoustic design can enhance, rather than limit, aesthetic expression.
3. Minimal disruption, maximum impact.
Despite installation challenges, high ceilings and the need to work outside opening hours, the project was completed without disrupting daily operations. This proves that acoustic upgrades can be implemented efficiently and safely without sacrificing daily activities.

How are the acoustics in your building?
Many workplaces in the Netherlands do not comply with the noise standard. Users often don't know how bad the acoustics are because they've gotten used to it. This often results in (physical) complaints such as headache, stress and concentration problems. One good acoustics can prevent this. The specialists at Akoesta are happy to help you with personal advice and, if necessary, with an acoustic measurement.
